Arapesh and Embedded vs. Disembedded economy Polanyi says, regarding the economy, â€Å"the economic process†¦.is embedded in noneconomic institutions.† An embedded economy is an economy in which economic activities occur such as, production and distribution; however other activities, which are not economic also occur. Activities such as forming friendships or helping other people may be happening, but it might just seem like the normal economic process because it is an embedded economy. When Polanyi says that the economy is â€Å"embedded in noneconomic institutions† he means that while economic activity is occurring, it is occurring for noneconomic reasons. The economic activity may be occurring in order to continue a friendship or help someone. Activities in an embedded economy often seem like they are not economic activities. They seem like this because usually the reason the economic activity is occurring is for noneconomic reasons. For example, if two bakers both produce wheat bread, but do not eat their own, instead they exchange bread, because they want to have a reason to be friends. This situation does not seem like economic activity, it seems like two people sharing their food. It actually is economic activity, because the two bakers are both producing and distributing their bread. So, even though the bakers are only exchanging the bread because they want to maintain their friendship, what they are doing is an economic activity that would happen in an embedded economy. Today most economic activity is considered to be part of a disembedded economy. In a disembedded economy, economic activity occurs only for economic reasons, so it is the opposite of an embedded economy. Economic activity is completely independent from such institutions as family or friendship. An example, of activity in a disembedded economy is a person going to a grocery store and buying bread. There is no other institution involved in the economic process of production and distribution of the bread which is why this would occur in a disembedded economy. The producer of the bread is making the bread so that he can sell it and get money for it, the consumer is buying the bread so it will belong to him. Economic activities of production and distribution are perceived by the Arapesh to just be part of their society. Everything that the Arapesh use and take care of daily belongs to someone else, whether it is their trees or pigs. The Arapesh believe that they must share what they own with the other Arapesh to help them survive.

Act 3 Scene 5, how does Shakespeare increase Essay

â€Å"Romeo and Juliet’ by William Shakespeare, portrays ‘a pair of star crossed lovers that take their life Doth with their death bury their parents strife. ‘ Shakespeare manages to set the scene of the greatest love story ever told, and reveals a romance discovered in Italy that concerns two feuding families (the Capulets and the Montagues) and two members of which that fall madly in love with each other. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is set over a five-day period, starting Sunday morning and ending Thursday morning. In those five days numerous events had occurred and the interpretation of particular characters change. Act 3 Scene 5 is a pivotal scene in the play as Juliet has already defied her parents by marrying a Montague. The interpretation of Juliet from the start of the play is that she is an obedient young girl, although as the play progresses the audience becomes aware that she is a growing woman who will persist until she gets what she wants. The Scene begins with Romeo and Juliet arguing about the fact that it is day. Juliet believes it is still night and the light coming through the windows is from the moon. Juliet doesn’t want Romeo to leave, though as the darkness of the light changes into the light of the day, the probability that he may be caught and killed for entry of the opposing house’s property increases (the feud between their houses). â€Å"Will thou be gone? It is not yet near day: It was the nightingale, and not the lark, that pierced the fearful hallow of thine ear. † However, Romeo feels quite differently and wishes to go, but after some time he changes his mind and reveals that he would much rather stay and be killed merely to spend extra time with his wife possibly because their future is uncertain due to Juliet’s arranged marriage and Romeo’s banishment. â€Å"Let me be Tame, let me be put to death, I am content. † And â€Å"I have more care to stay then will to go, come, death, and welcome! Juliet wills it so! † After these comments, Juliet changes her mind and attempts the persuasion of Romeo’s departure. Through this part of the scene the language of Juliet is very apprehensive, and it shows that she doesn’t know what could happen if Romeo if he stays. This may be why Juliet changes her mind because Romeo tells her what will happen to him if he stays. This creates a fear for Romeo’s safety within the audience. â€Å"It is, it is, hie hence, be gone, away! † – This phrase has the ability to add tension. During this part of the scene, the singing of the birds can be compared to Romeo and Juliet’s relationship. During the day, the relationship must be hidden away and kept secret, but at night, it can be enjoyed and appreciated. This aspect is represented by the battle of the lark over the nightingale: At night the couple is relaxed and loving, and as the darkness slowly turns to light the couple continue to argue and the marriage becomes a burden once more. â€Å"I must be gone and live, or stay and die. † â€Å"Yon light is not daylight, I know it, I. † As well as the comparison between bird songs/ the time of day against the state of Romeo and Juliet’s relationship this section of the play shows that when the couple are together, they finish off each other’s sentences with rhyming couplets. It composes harmony; in contrast these rhyming couplets only come when they are talking of leaving. This togetherness and separation go well together questioning the audience as to whether Romeo and Juliet are the perfect couple. In the events leading up to Act 3 Scene 5, Romeo has been banished and so is spending a final night with Juliet. Furthermore the audience has just learnt that Lord Capulet has agreed to let Paris marry Juliet on Thursday. This leaves the audience worried for not only Romeo’s safety but also Juliet as her father is starting to show signs of anger. Knowing this makes the audience tense; this is good as Act 3 Scene 5 can (in a stage performance) go at the beginning of the second half. This means the audience is in suspense over the interval; they know there is a conflict coming, perhaps even involving violence. Having just left a scene showing anger, Shakespeare cuts straight to Romeo and Juliet together. This more romantic atmosphere has an opposite affect on the audience conjuring more tension; the audience wants to know what is going to happen to Juliet between her parents. Cutting from anger to happiness comes about again during the scene. A countdown Just after line 36 the Nurse enters â€Å"hastily†. Shakespeare uses few stage directions in his plays so on occasions when he does it is to be noted. The Nurse’s rushed entrance can either bring danger or there is a comic potential (or perhaps both). The Nurse already knows of Romeo and Juliet’s marriage but may not be prepared for what she might find. The Nurse and Juliet address each other by their titles. These could be delivered in a variety of ways to create different effects. It creates danger, confusion and perhaps a chance for comedy in a couple of one-word lines. This is also the last time Juliet will see Romeo alive and yet she is already seeing him dead. Juliet uses more puns when she and Lady Capulet are talking. Although this time Juliet is aware of it as well as the audience, Lady Capulet is not. â€Å"Yet let me weep for such a feeling loss. † (74) All through their conversation the audience keeps thinking that Juliet is about to confess to her mother about Romeo. However, every time they are let and down and Juliet’s hints go unnoticed. This makes the audience more worked up and frustrated. The audience, sometimes confused by her generosity, know of the Capulet’s agreement with Paris. Therefore they are suspicious and foresee a change in heart and another change in atmosphere; they know Lady Capulet has to get down to business. After a long wait Lady Capulet finally does her tine and informs Juliet of her arranged marriage with Paris; a shock for both audience and Juliet for it is done most obviously. It was common in the times of Shakespeare for children (mainly of rich and often girls) to be married to a person chosen by the parents. This was to gain money, power or (and) to improve relations with other families, countries or regions. Despite the triviality of this Shakespeare seems to understand how a young woman might feel being married to some she does not know or like. Juliet gets very upset and refuses to marry. The audience is feeling sympathy for Juliet but also expect her to confess as last to get rid of Paris. There is a combination of excitement and fear that mix together well and get the audience on the edge of their seats. Juliet’s safety is now feared for though as Capulet is now known to be determined. He was in the previous scene and he will be now. However the faithful Nurse has changed and now fears Capulet and the loss of her job. She tries to persuade Juliet into thinking that she would be much better off with Paris. This betrayal is another shock to the audience; one of the last allies has changed sides it seems. Now the audience is waiting to find out what Juliet will do now her whole family is against her. They are confused and perhaps worried that Juliet seems to agree with the Nurse and thanks her. The scene ends with a second soliloquy from Juliet. This gives an insight to exactly what Juliet is thinking. Through the scene her discussions have been full of puns and lies. These soliloquies give her true feelings. This makes the audience to feel in touch with Juliet and helps to relate to her. Again Juliet says she shall commit suicide. She also shows that she is ashamed of the Nurse and even curses her. Juliet wants him to stay as long as possible â€Å"Yon light is not daylight†, this line brings out further the strong feelings of love they both share because they do not want to leave each others presence. The audience feels their love is very strong and true this helps them to sympathise with the characters, bringing them to life. Before their love causes any conflict, the two argue whether Romeo should leave or not. They are so infatuated and content with each other, neither wish to leave each other’s side. Although Juliet wishes to postpone Romeo’s departure, she cannot hide the facts of the coming morning, although she tries. â€Å"Yond light is not daylight, I know it, I: It is some meteor that the sun exhaled† Their situation, position and relationship are now very clear. By night, they can be in each other’s company as they wish, however as soon as day comes, their love must be a secret. Juliet is in the position that she cannot keep her lover in daylight, and must let him escape. Romeo then portrays his love for Juliet saying how he does not care if the two are caught together, â€Å"Let me be put to death,† His departure is looming, and invites death if it be necessary as long as the two are together, he does not care, â€Å"Come, death, and welcome! † He would welcome death if it meant they could stay together. Juliet then accepts what this could mean if Romeo does not leave soon, and changes her tone completely, â€Å"It is, it is, hie hence, be gone, away! † Juliet is now seeing their relationship from a more mature position, and Romeo departs. In this part of the scene, Juliet uses the imagery of birdsong, as a comparison to the lover’s relationship. They can only see each other at night, when all is at ease and peaceful. Shakespeare uses the imagery of a nightingale to represent this. They are getting along and are in harmony. As morning is coming, the ease is interrupted with their arguing, and resembles the â€Å"Harsh discords and unpleasing sharps† of the lark. It is more apparent to the audience now Juliet’s anxiety as to their relationship will continue this way. As light grows, so do their problems, â€Å"More light and light, more dark and dark our woes! † Dramatic devices are then introduced in the scene, which increases the tension both on the stage and in the audience. Romeo is still in the room as the Nurse enters to announce Lady Capulet’s soon arrival. He simply cannot be caught, and the anxiety in the audience is increased, as it is a matter of time before she comes in. She then calls her daughter as Romeo is departing, indicating her soon arrival. The lovers spend a long time saying their farewells, and Romeo has not completely gone by the time Lady Capulet enters the room. The time period between the Nurses announcement that Lady Capulet will soon be there, causes the audience to feel the building tension, as well as the growing strains on their relationship. From Juliet’s point of view, their relationship brings her much grief every time Romeo leaves her side. As Juliet weeps over Romeo’s departure, her mother enters. She sees her daughter weeping, and can only think that she is grieving still over the death of Tybalt. â€Å"Evermore weeping for your cousin’s death? What, wilt thou wash him from his grave with tears? † Juliet is worried constantly for the safety of Romeo, and their relationship brings her a lot of grief. At this point, it must be frustrating for the audience, as they know what Juliet is really upset about. The irony is that she is in fact grieving for the enemy of the family, Romeo. Lady Capulet then swears vengeance on Romeo for Tybalt’s death. As Juliet could not possibly admit to her relationship with Romeo, all she can do is agree, whilst also speaking truths. â€Å"God pardon him, I do with all my heart: And yet no man like he doth grieve my heart. † For all the grief their relationship has brought them, and is destined to bring them, Juliet is still adamant that their love is not in vain. The audience understands Juliet’s real sorrows, however her mother does not. This occurs many times during the play, as it is very secretive, and people’s words are not always as they seem. When Lady Capulet talks about Romeo as a villain, Juliet can say how she really feels, although it is an aside. She tries to take her murder-planning mother of the subject, by asking of her other news – her impending marriage to the County Paris. Juliet is obviously completely shocked by Lady Capulet’s news of her intended marriage to Paris, and immediately refuses. â€Å"Now by Saint Peter’s Church and Peter too, He shall not make me there a joyful bride. † Juliet and the audience know that she simply cannot go through with this marriage, however her mother does not understand her objection. Juliet is now in a very awkward and somewhat unavoidable position. She cannot tell her parents of her marriage to Romeo, nor can she betray her religion and Romeo by marrying Paris as well. All she can do is refuse, and face the wrath of her father, which both she and the audience can expect. The language used in this scene is also a contributing factor to what Juliet is going through. Juliet is usually a very respectful and obedient towards her mother. At many points she calls her Madam, and as Lady Capulet is about to announce Juliet’s proposed marriage, she responds â€Å"Madam, in happy time, what day is that? † It would take something alarmingly upsetting for Juliet to respond in the way she does, â€Å"I will not marry yet, and when I do, I swear It shall be Romeo, whom you know I hate, Rather than Paris. These are news indeed! † Her manner changes towards her mother drastically. She is obviously and understandably appalled from the audience’s point of view. By saying she would sooner marry Romeo, she is making a very strong objection, although she is in fact lying about her hatred for her husband. She then must face the wrath of her father when she tells him of her refusal. He sees her crying once more, and at first her reaction must be of irritation at her father’s naivity, â€Å"How now, a conduit, girl? What, still in tears? Evermore show’ring? In one little body? † The audience knows very well of Juliet’s true sorrow, and it must be irritating for everyone to keep confusing it. Once Juliet then tells her father of her gratitude, and also her refusal of Paris, he scolds her for her selfishness, even though it is quite obvious how ignorant he is being. Juliet does not want to marry Paris, and her father for some reason cannot understand it. It suggests she is using riddles, as her father says, â€Å"How how, how how, chopt-logic? What is this? ‘Proud’, and ‘I thank you’, and ‘I thank you not’, And yet ‘ not proud’, mistress minion you? † The play suggests that she really does want to tell her parents of her relationship with Romeo, and her inability to marry Paris, but she knows she can not. The audience can now see the position she is in, and that there is no escape. Capulet says how he would rather her marry â€Å"A gentleman of noble parentage,† Meaning he would rather Juliet marry anyone with respectable parents for his own personal gain. He does not care of her opinion. Juliet is young and can only think of her love for Romeo. The audience can see that through their passionate love for each other. Juliet thinks she can turn to her mother in what is fast becoming an emotional plea for help. Her mother simply disowns her own daughter, and is disgusted as her husband. â€Å"Talk not to me, for I’ll not speak a word. Do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee. † The audience must feel Juliets pain and loneliness at this point. Her mother and father have been disgraced by their daughter’s refusal to marry, and rightly so. Her husband has been exiled, and although she does not know, she will never see him alive again. Now she must turn to the closest person she has ever had, her nurse. The Nurse is their servant, and is told what to do, and to a degree what to think. The Nurse does her best to try to change her mind, but she knows that Juliet is not going to be shifted. The Nurse agrees with Juliet’s parents, â€Å"O, he’s a lovely gentleman! Romeo’s a dishclout to him. † Juliet now realises that there is no point staying in the house. Her parents have disowned her, and the Nurse can offer her no comfort. Some may say she is being spoilt and ignorant, however based on the evidence suggested by the text, the audience is likely to feel sympathy for the girl and her plight. There is one final person she can possibly go to, Friar Lawrence. â€Å"I’ll to the Friar to know his remedy; If all else fail, myself have power to die. † As the scene closes, the audience can sense the oncoming tragedy, which has been building up to this point. It seems that Juliet’s position is only going to get worse as it does. In this scene, how does Shakespeare increase the audience’s awareness of Juliet’s position. Firstly, Juliet has to deal with a lot at such a young age, and in very difficult circumstances. Her husband has been exiled, and can only see him at night. Her parents have dropped on her the proposition to marry the County Paris, or to be disowned penniless. She knows she cannot as she has no feelings for him, as well as her marriage to Romeo. Her Nurse, who she has trusted for many years can offer her no comfort, and she must seek the help of the Friar as her last resort. If all else fails, she will take her own life. Shakespeare has made the audience very aware of her position in both the audiences’ eyes and the eyes of the other characters. A good listener can easily respond if he/she possesses an effective listening if they can evaluate the meanings, sound patterns and the vocabulary of each words. (Rost, 2002) defines listening, in its broadest sense, as a process of receiving what the speaker actually says (receptive orientation); constructing and representing meaning (constructive orientation); negotiating meaning with the speaker and responding (collaborative orientation); and, creating meaning through involvement, imagination and empathy (transformative orientation). In the process of communication, 40% came from listening while speaking have only 35%. It means that listening is the most important tool in communication process. It may become ineffective if the listener have some difficulties in recognizing the sound pattern and the structure of each words. It may also affect the communication procedure when there is misunderstanding to the speaker through its barriers which is the noise. And most of the time, the listener itself lose their attention and interest to the topic which can affects the relationship between the speaker and listener. So they should motivate their listeners so that they will continue in delivering their messages to their respective audience. There are three levels of listening; each is characterized by certain behaviors that affect listening effectiveness. Level 1 has the highest potential for understanding, retention and effective communication; level 3 has the lowest. These are general categories to help us understand our listening; they overlap and interchange depending on the situation. All of us listen at different levels of effectiveness throughout the day, as the circumstances and people around us change. For example, it is difficult for most people to listen effectively in the midst of a highly conflicted situation, when they are dealing with emotional people, when they are being criticized, when they are being corrected, or when they are feeling fearful, anxious, or angry. Others listen very effectively when they are working or ministering, only to tune out when they arrive home. These are the three levels of listening; a. ) the active listening that gives the full attention to listening when another is talking and focuses on what is being said and doesn’t allow the distraction but fully alert and engaged; b. the passive listening where the listener hears words but does not really listen because he couldn’t really understand the significance of what is being said; and c. ) the non-listening where the listener’s attention and response is not real and he/she pays attention to himself and own thoughts. Very few people spend most of their time listening at level 1. Most of us listen at all three levels over the course of a day, but the more we listen at level 1, the more effective we will be as leaders. Listening is a five-step process consisting of listening preparation, receiving, constructing meaning, responding, and remembering (Hybels & Weaver, 2007). The first three steps are crucial. Skipping a step can be disastrous. How accurate of a response can be derived without first preparing to listen followed by receiving information? There could not be enough information to accurately construct a meaning. The first step, preparation, is the foundation for listening. Having the proper mindset and environment are critical. The second step in the active process of listening is receiving. A number of processes involved in comprehension are intrapersonal; that is, they take place inside your head. This section familiarizes you with the nature of human information processing and the concept of inner speech. c. Remembering There has been a great deal of research on memory. Remembering is essential if you intend to apply what you have heard in future situations. This chapter acquaints you with the three basic memory systems and the work that has been done in listening training and assessment with regard to the memory process. d. Interpreting When you interpret message you do two things. First, you take into accounts the total communication context so that you are better able to understand the meaning of what is said from the speaker’s point of view. Your ability to empathize, or to see a situation from the other person’s perspective, requires that you pay attention to emotional meaning and to the communicate context. Second, effective listeners let their partners know that they have been understood. e. I had numerous health problems because of the liquid weight loss diet that I was on. I had everything from Kidney infection to shingles due to my unhealthy way of losing weight. Bonnie Bloodgett agrees with saying Rapid weight loss may accelerate formation of gallstones. 179 people are currently suing a major diet company because of gallstone complications while pursing the companys diet. The company denies responsibility. Society and the healthcare providers need to do a better job of promoting better ways of living. I admit we have come along way, but an article out of health and medical issue states The best way to lose weight is through increased exercise, moderate reduction of calories and a life long change in eating habits. Instead of the diet industry promoting all their diets, they need to make sure what they are doing is best for the consumer and not for their pockets. In addition, the Diet Company knows that when you come off their liquid diets you will gain back. Another article out of medical health issues says Up to 90 percent of dieters who lose more than 25 pounds gain it all back within 2 years. I personally do not understand why you would waste your time on something that will not last and not focus more on long term goals of healthy weight loss. I do not think the Supreme Court should make random drug tests constitutional. Making students take drug tests is just another way for the Supreme Court to dig their claws in peoples’ everyday lives. When you take a drug test you are submitting yourself to be judged. If you refuse, people will assume you are doing drugs, if you take it, you are trying to prove your innocence. The law is assuming everyone is guilty of using drugs, by having random drug tests. I believe you should not punish the innocent with the guilty. One of the reasons I think taking random drug tests is wrong is because, it is an invasion of privacy. I personally, being in sports and extracurricular activities, would not want to have to take a drug test when I know I do not use drugs. Randomly giving drug tests takes away a person’s freedom and right to say â€Å"No†. I strongly believe if you take away that right people will start rebelling against the school and the law. People will stop being in extracurricular activities and playing sports out of fear, being found out or to keep their privacy. If students start rebelling, the school will lose a lot of good players and participants. Either they will quit or their parents will take them out, because not only are the kids being put on display but their families as well. By losing an abundance of participants or players the school will get a bad reputation. Sports and academics are the two most important things at our school. As small of a thing as taking random drug tests is, it could mess up the order of the school. Some people might think it is needed to weed out the innocent and guilty, but there are ways of getting around drug tests. You can use another person’s pee or you can use an ointment to mask the drugs, there are probably many other ways. Also no test is one hundred percent accurate. On many occasions people get in trouble over a test discrepancy. Making random drug tests a law is not going to solve anything. In conclusion, I think random drug tests are wrong and an invasion of privacy. It should not take place in schools, because it will only cause problems and result in riots. When making laws the government should consider all aspects of the situation. Even though it could tell us who is using drugs and who is dishonest, in this generation people know of many ways to get around failing a drug test. So there is no sure way of weaving the bad away from the good.

Conformity discussion Essay Conformity was first researched by Jenness (1932) who placed a large number of beans in a bottle and asked students to estimate the number and then arranged for them to discuss their guesses with a group, later when asked to give their estimates again; he found their individual estimates had converged towards that of the group. In Sherifs (1935) study of conformity, Sherif used the autokinetic effect in which a stationary spotlight in the dark seems to be moving due to slight movements of the eye. When participants were asked by how much and in what direction did the spotlight move they tended to make judgements that were very close to each others when placed in a group. The fact that a group norm rapidly replaced the personal norms of the members of the group indicates the existence of social influence. Asch questioned the results of Sheriffs study and claimed that participants only conformed because the stimulus was ambiguous. Asch (1951) set up a situation in which 7 people all sat looking at a display they were given the task of saying out loud which one of the three lines a, b or c was the same the same length as the given stimulus line all but one of the participants were confederates. On the crucial trials on which the confederates all gave the same wrong answer the genuine participant also gave the wrong answer on 37% of these trials. This showed that group pressures to conform were stronger then previously thought since the situation was unambiguous. This led to Deutsh and Gerard (1955) to identify two explanations for conformity, Normative and Informational influence. The latter occurs when an individual conforms because of the superior knowledge or judgement of others as in Sherifs (1935) study of conformity. Informational influence tends to lead to a change in private opinion. Normative influence occurs when an individual conforms because the person wants to be liked by the other members of a group, and also wants to avoid rejection as in Asch (1951). Normative influence is not likely to change private opinions but public opinions. However, since these studies it has been found that there exists a historical difference and cultural differences in conformity. One of the limitations of Aschs work was the background of the participants; obtained from the United States in the early 1940s, Americans were said to be more conformist than other people. Perrin Spencer (1980) conducted research in which they repeated Aschs study in England and found little evidence of conformity in comparison to Aschs study, leading them to conclude that Aschs study was a child of its time. In addition to this Smith and Bond (1993) carried out an analysis of a number of studies that had used Aschs task in the United States. They concluded that: Levels of conformity in general had steadily declined since Aschs study in the early 1950s. Still, Perrin Spencers study was criticized on the grounds that the participants they selected were educated to a high standard and therefore had more confidence in their opinion. This together with Smith and Bonds research suggests that the decline in conformity through time has been largely due to changes in education practices. Hence the aim of this study is to investigate levels of conformity amongst sixth form tutors at Moseley UK, it is presumed that there will be little evidence of conformity since the participants have been through an education system that supposedly promotes independent thinking, as well as the time difference between now, and the original conformity studies. It is also true that the participants experience of society will reflect that of an individualistic nature where the emphasis is on and around the individual to have a sense of personal identity, thus reducing the likelihood of conformity. This will be done by partially replicating the Jennes jellybean study. Experimental hypothesis: The participants will produce estimates that are close to the fake answers already written down in the high and low conditions.  Null Hypothesis: The participants estimates will be unaffected by the fake answers already written down in the high and low conditions.  The experimental hypothesis is based on previous research. Method  Design  Field Experiment design in that experiment was conducted within the school, this design was preferred as it was the most cost and time effective. Independent and Dependant variables included (IV= Condition, DV=estimate). There were 2 conditions High answer condition and a Low answer condition. Independent design in that each participant is selected for only one group. Directional Hypothesis was selected on the basis of previous research, the level of conformity, whether it was significant, was to be established using the Mann-Whitney U test at a significance level of p=0.05.

Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) Research Validity Internal, External and Construct Validity Introduction Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) has been utilized with success in students with or without learning disabilities and it is mainly attributed due to increased time concentrated on reading materials or exercises on the computer. It offers productive practice and time management and is an effective tool to used as a supplement to providing drills (Williams, Wright, Callaghan, Coughlan, 2002). Some of the advantages that the CAI provides inside the classroom include one-on-one exercise with minimal supervisory time involving the teacher. In many cases, instant feedback to students allows mistakes to be rectified immediately. Certain programs offer features that monitor speed and accuracy of answers and the regularity of instruction for subject mastery (Wong, 2008). Internal Validity Threats In a research study done by Coleman-Martin, Heller, Cihak, Irvine (2005), a slower acquisition rate score was recorded when a different Windows version (i.e., XP versus Windows 98) was used during one of the test sessions. The variation of the platform caused the PowerPoint slide presentation to run slower than the prior sessions that resulted to disrupting its timing and consistency. Computer skills, familiarity with the software programs, and prior knowledge in the question format (i.e., multiple choice) are factors to consider that might have influence the rate at which the students learned words identification (Coleman-Martin, et al., 2005, p. 90). Similarly, according to research study conducted by Fuchs, L., Fuchs, D., Hamlet, C., Powell, S., Capizzi, A., Seethaler, P. (2006) on the effects of CAI on number combination skill in at-risk first graders, their procedures did not take into consideration the keyboarding skills of at-risk first graders and the possibility that errors related to the learners typing skills reduced the effectiveness of the CAI. External Threats to Validity According to Savage, R., Deault, L., Abrami, P., Hipps, G. (2009), one limitation found on their research regarding a randomized controlled trial study of the ABRACADABRA reading intervention was that students with inferior literacy and associated skills during pretest were more likely not to show up for testing at follow-up. The researchers believed that this is an issue of experimental mortality insinuating that the postponement of posttest outcomes are almost certainly less generalizable to typical reader samples than the more immediate posttest statistics ( Savage, et al., 2009, p. 602). Threats to Construct Validity Bannert (2000) and Van Gog (2005) research study suggested that giving the students control over portions of their instruction allow them to better negotiate the cognitive challenges placed on them as students. They further noted that learner-control participants performed better on a test of transfer than the participants who received no control. Van Gog (2005) hypothesized that over time, improved performance would be visible during training situations along with the capability of the learner to assess and rectify future problematic situations when learners are progressively awarded with more control over their instruction as their skill level intensified. In contrast, Eom and Reiser (2000) revealed that junior high students who were given the opportunity to control their instruction displayed considerably worse performance than those who were not allowed to control their instruction. The same results were reported by several researchers (Farrell and Moore, 2000 and Swaak and de Jong, 2001) who stated that providing students control over their instruction concludes in trivial or insignificant advancement. It may be a case of poor construct definition where a construct may have been mislabeled or defined at a wrong level either too general or too specific. In this case, it is possible that establishing the types of control given to the students will be a crucial factor. Impact of Validity Issues Several validity issues could affect the envisioned research regarding the effectiveness of the type of CAI programs that are currently used as a remediation tool for at-risk students. One limitation is the inclination for technology difficulties because technology can be unpredictable. Respect in a Scene from Death of a Salesman :: essays research papers

In every book there is a scene, one specific scene that the whole entire story can relate to. In The Death of a Salesman, Willy talks about a salesman, Dave Singleman who was well known and respected. Dave was a true salesman and Willy wanted that not only for himself but also for his son, Biff. Therefore he tried whatever he could to try and lead a life based on Dave. This scene portrays the respect that one person could have and the reflection and inheritance from one person to another. Willy Loman is an aged salesman who has found a fork in the road. Willy lost his job and so in this scene Willy tries to earn a job by explaining his story of Dave Singleman. Willy is telling this story to Howard, a businessman in which he wants to earn a job from. After explaining the story, hoping to gain respect from Howard, Willy has not succeeded because Howard had not given the Willy a job, and doesn?t plan to in the future. Though Willy still finds strength and determination in himself and soon turns to his son, Biff. Biff is an adult who has yet to find a job because of his failing math grade. Willy wants Biff to follow his footsteps and invest in a job as a salesman. Even though in this scene Dave is only mentioned once throughout the entire book, it takes on a lot of importance to relate his story to the book as a whole. Dave?s respect and gratitude towards others is what Willy had and what Willy wants Biff to have as well. In this scene Willy says how much respect Dave Singleman had as a salesman before he passed away. ? ?Cause what would be more satisfying than to be able to go, at the age of eighty-four, into twenty or thirty different cities, and pick up a phone, and be remembered and loved and helped by so many different people (Act 2, page 61). This sentence shows how Dave and Willy are alike because they both are known wherever they go. This shows how much they are respected and loved by their buyers and how Willy wants to pass this characteristic of a salesman on to his son Biff. In the book, many scenes show how well Willy was known and no one would forget his name. ? Because the man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead.

Arabs in the Media: Victim or Villain?   Ã‚  Ã‚   For decades, the media portrayal of the Arab culture and Islam has contributed to a skewed public opinion in America. Looking closely at the news coverage concerning the Middle East and the United States, there is an inherent media bias against Arabs and Muslims as foreign threats to domestic security. Stephen Franklin argues that "Islamic nations are often portrayed in news reports as uniformly intolerant and anti-democratic" (Franklin 17). Unfortunately, such coverage has contributed to the public and government misconceptions of all Arabs and Muslims as terrorists. According to Fawaz Gerges, "terrorism has emerged as one of the most important political issues in the United States...[linking] it to Islamic militancy..." (Gerges 79). Moreover, the media's skewed depiction of the Arabs and Muslims has perpetuated countless stereotypes that undoubtedly affect the American opinion. These stereotypes and misconceptions of the Arabs and Muslims clearly indicate a media bias provoked by ignorance and ethnocentricity. The elite media's role in the portrayal of the Arab culture and Islam following the Oklahoma City bombing has had adetrimental effect on America's public opinion, investigation proceedings, and government action.    Once word of the Oklahoma City bombing reached the Associated Press and major American publications, journalists were quick to point the finger of guilt at Muslim fundamentalism. The Western perspective of the Middle East is a dark one. The Muslims are looked at as ruthless and barbaric people, inclined to kill and destroy. Cyberbullying as a Social Issue Essay

           There are varius social issues that need to be highlighted today, but cyberbullying has in one way or the other impacted on everybody. Bullying is categorized as hostile behavior where a prevailing group abuses its authority by threatening a less central group (Maher, 2008). Bullying is a by-product of the capitalist society that advocates for personal advancement over any other goals. From a tender age, children are encouraged to be the best they can be. Instincts push people to achieve these results at any cost. The overriding instinct in most instances is personal survival and the need to dominate others. If an person does not have the right values, they devise ways to intimidate others out of the competition. In the past incidents of bullying were limited to the relatively few cases of face-to-face bullying. All this has changed in the information age. Proliferation of communication devices combined with the internet provides fertile ground for bullying. One re ason that could explain the rise in Cyberbullying is the anonymity that the internet affords. People know that they do not have to account for their actions online and therefore tend to be more belligerent than usual. In the past the threat of physical confrontation in bullying was always present, however, the internet has largely diminished that threat. Forms of cyber bullying          Previously, I thought that only on field bullying existing. However as we went deeper in the course I realized that there exists different types of bullying. I also came to learn that cyberbullying takes more than one form. Cyberbullying refers to a range of activities done online that are harmful to the well-being of the victim (NoBullying.com). These may take the form of flaming where an argument between two people quickly spreads to include more people each taking one side of the argument and hurling insults to people on the other side. Another form is harassment, where a bully humiliates the victim by sending hurtful images, text messages, or emails about the victim. This type of bullying has grown with the recent trend of making memes. Memes are images containing a message meant to ridicule the victim. Denigration is another form of Cyberbullying; the bully attacks and tarnishes the victims through spreading false information about them.             Impersonation is another form of Cyberbullying. The bully assumes the identity of another person with malicious intent. Closely related to this is outing where someone gains personal information about the victim using dishonest means such as impersonation. The bully then publicizes that information with the aim of humiliating the victim. We also have stalking which involves following the victim online in an unjustified way. As illustrated, Cyberbullying involves a myriad of activities taking place in the online space. These activities involve both passive and active participation by victims and bullies (InDirect) Causes of online bullying               Online bullying may happen for several reasons. First, bullying by popular kids happens because they want to maintain their popularity (Donegan, 2012). Such people use bullying to validate their popularity. Often, this requires the support of backers and henchmen who remain on the sidelines cheering actively and passively as the bully brings down the victim. This kind of bullying is likely to target famous people since attacking them provides the bully with potential for attracting more attention. In addition to popularity, hurting others makes such people feel powerful. The more people they bully the more powerful they become. Taking on famous figures boosts the power of such bullies to even greater heights (NoBullying.com).                The other group of online bullies is people who are less socially successful. This group forms the bulk of cyber bullies. They find solace in bullying as it helps them cope with their low self-esteem. Their objective is to fit in with their peers and bullying provides a chance to help them achieve this goal (InDirect). Cyberbullying requires even less courage than traditional forms of bullying. The internet with its anonymity helps people show their true colours. Cyber bullies might not be bullies in real life but since the internet provides them with anonymity, they take advantage of that to bully others (Donegan 2012).               Effects of CyberbullyingStudies have shown that bullying causes emotional damage to its victims though most of these victims find it difficult to admit it. In a study involving over 3000 students, researchers learnt that out of all bullying victims, 38% felt vengeful, 37% were angry, while 24% felt helpless. Another study conducted by the Cyberbullying Research Centre using a sample size of 468 students drew almost similar conclusions. They found that out of all the female victims 39% felt frustrated, 36% felt angry and 25% felt sad about it, the males figures were 27%, 36% and 17% for each of those respective categories. Females seem to show high susceptibility to bullying than males. However, this is hardly surprising since males tend to admit emotional weakness less readily than their female counterparts do (Hinduja & Patchin, 2009).             Sociologist Robert Agnew developed the Great Strain Theory, which hypothesizes that victims of bullying can develop problematic emotions, which cause deviant behaviour. The victim goes through a vicious cycle and this can result to the victim developing antisocial behaviour as they try to process their emotions and find an outlet for their anger and frustration (Hinduja and Patchin, 2009).               Bullying also takes a toll on the bully. According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention report, over 60% of males with bullying tendencies between grade six and nine were later convicted of at least one crime in their adult life. This is in comparison to 23% of people who did not bully. Forty per cent of these former bullies got at least three conviction by the time they were age 24 years; this is in comparison to 10% of those who were not bullies (Donegan, 2012). When bullies use bullying as a coping mechanism it leads to development of a vicious cycle for both the victim and the bully (Oleus, 2001). Evidently, bullying has a heavy toll on the society, the effects of this habit are long lasting, and some individuals feel the repercussions throughout their life. Solutions             Solutions to Cyberbullying will come from solving the general problem of bullying since Cyberbullying is only a subset of the wider problem of bullying. Wiseman reports a study conducted in Nevada that identified six essential elements in dealing with bullying in schools; availability of a reporting procedure, integration in the curriculum, student-centred approach with students taking the initiative of stopping the practice, prevention rather than punishment, effective punishment to deter the practice, and keeping up with technology. A solution to bullying must incorporate all stakeholders involved in growth of a child starting with parents and teachers (Wiseman, 2011). Conclusion          Capitalism subconsciously fosters bullying by placing pressure on individuals to succeed. However, this is not a reason to tolerate this vice. Competition is only good if it is fair and productive. The rise in bullying should be viewed in the context of moral decay of the society. Advances in information technology and emergence of social media have led to the evolution of bullying with new forms of bullying occurring in this new space. The toll of bullying in society is huge and steps must be taken to address this menace through legal and social means. Biopsychosocial Analysis of Maria Andrade Essay

Maria Andrade is 79 years old. She came to America as a Cuban refugee at the age of 20. She was raised by her grandparents in Cuba. She began working at the age of 14. When she arrived in Miami, she was able to obtain part time employment and immediately enrolled herself in ESL classes. Thereafter she attended community college for about two years. She then moved to Los Angeles due to being accepted to UCLA where she obtained a BA in Sociology and a Masters’ in Business Administration. She worked for a private bank for about 24 years where she met her current husband. She now works for the Department of Public Social Services where she has been working for about 25 years and is planning on retiring in the near future. She has been working for the past 49 years non -stop not including the years she worked in Cuba. Maria got married at the age of 30 and has been married since. I recall Maria stating that although she is looking forward to retirement and loves her husband very much, one reason she is not looking forward to retirement is due to the fact that she will now have to spend the majority of her time with her husband. She feels that one of the reasons they have had a long successful marriage is due in part to the fact that she and her husband have not had to spend all their time together and have been able to have separate lives away from each other due to both of them having full time employment with different schedules. The reason I mention the marriage is because she has been working for 49 plus years and therefore, she will now have to adjust to a new life that does not include work. Maria also stated that when she retires she will be able to spend more time with her grandchildren and close friends and family. She will continue to be active by gardening, walking, swimming and any other activity that her mind, body and soul as she  puts it, allow her to. Maria understands the importance of maintaining an active life style â€Å"The new model for successful aging includes physical and mental well-being and contains three elements: avoiding disease and disability, sustaining high cognitive and physical function, and engaging with life (NIMH, 2002; Row & Kahn, 1997). The reason Maria is able to remain active now is because she began taking care of herself as a teenager after both of her parents passed from severe cases of diabetes. She made a conscious decision to always eat healthy and remain physically active. She kept this way of thinking even after arriving in a foreign country. Although diabetes runs in her family, she has been able to remain free of diabetes and other major health issues that seem to plague older people. She feels that majoring in Sociology helped her to understand the importance of how living a healthy life style from an early age will help in the aging process, â€Å"In early childhood, the life cycle’s second phase, learning physical autonomy and control of one’s bodily functions, versus shame and doubt in not learning them, paves the way for coping with deterioration of the body in old age† (Hillier, Barrow, 9e, p76). At 79 years old, since I have known Maria, she has not had been on any type of medical leave. She believes that her parents’ death served as a wake-up call for her. She feels that if it were not for both of them dying, she may not have lived to 79 years old because she would have eventually developed diabetes. Her mental well being was affected so much so that at one point while still in Cuba, she was starving herself in order to avoid eating the â€Å"wrong foods†. She eventually learned what types of food were healthy and unhealthy. Maria feels that her perceptions, intelligence, learning, memory and personality have been affected but only because she feels that it is part of the natural aging affected process, â€Å"Normal aging includes stable intellectual functioning, capacity for change, and productive engagement with life† (Hillier, Barrow, 9e, p122). She admits to once in a while not remembering where she left items. Although her perceptions and memory have been slightly affected, she has been able to maintain a work load of 400 plus cases. As mentioned before, once she retires, she will be spending a lot of time with family and friends. Maria and her siblings became even closer after her parents passed away. Together they experienced the deaths of both parents and they travelled together from Cuba and have not separated since. Therefore, she understands the importance of having family and friends in your life, â€Å"Given their shared experiences, siblings can be a major resource for life review among older adults†, (Hillier, Barrow, 9e, p153). She keeps close relationships with her brother and sister as she is the eldest and has always been protective of them. Maria and her husband will assume the roles of babysitters for their grandchildren. They volunteered to take care of their grandchildren as part of their plan to continue with their active lifestyle. Maria understands how important she and her siblings were to her own grandparents as they were raised by her mother’s parents. Maria will continue to be physically active by walking, gardening and swimming and will continue with her friendships. Currently she meets with her friends once a week due to her full time work schedule; however, once she is retired, she is planning on meeting with her friends every other day. She knows how important friendships are; therefore, she understands that by maintaining her friendships so close to her, she will be able to turn to them for support as she feels that she may need it once she retires, â€Å"Friendship is extremely important in the lives of elderly people† (Hillier, Barrow, 9e p162). As for her husband, she believes that he is a blessing because she understands that not everyone is lucky enough to live a long married life, let alone getting to an older age while still having your spouse by your side. Maria feels that he has been an integral part of her overall well being. He supports her with everything she does. They both maintain well eating habits and daily exercise although she states that he protests at times, â€Å"Marriage maintains health: married people tend to have higher levels of well-being and better health than unmarried people† (Hillier, Barrow, 9e p174).
